Once upon a time there was a couple

who could no longer afford their addiction

so decided to make their own drugs

out of each other.

He took a strand of her hair and pressed the

end

to a vein on the inside of his elbow.

The hair was sucked inside and he fell asleep.

She ran her nails up and down the the dry skin of

his face

and piled the flakes on the kitchen table.

Dividing the pile into a few narrow lines she

breathed in

every bit of him

and sat awake for the rest of her life

Illustrating a short story called 'Remission' by Adam Mars-Jones.

The narrator who has been diagnosed with HIV, takes two lovers from a Lonely Hearts column whom he affectionately calls his two 'lions.' He uses them at different times of the day so they can never meet.

I've been drawing on an old book, hence the text in the background. Really lovely surface to work on, old paper.

Poster for the 'Urban Car Boot' sale at the lovely Nexus Art Cafe, Manchester.

I only just got inDesign this week, and was honestly struggling with it every waking moment until I finally realized that it was looking a bit shit, so I went back to the safety blanket of photoshop. The text and background style are far too crisp in this for my grubby little drawings. I think the colour is the only thing holding this together.

I was commissioned to paint the bathrooms of Iguana Bar in Chorlton, so I've just finished the mens bathrooms today. On the music theme, I copied the Beatles album cover Revolver..

'Moving Pictures'

I was asked to illustrate an accompanying brochure for the production. 'Moving Pictures' is a play written by Cathy Crabb about two women and how their lives have turned out.

It only has two main characters, who are the polar opposite of each other; it begins by this boisterous woman, Anne descending onto the flat of Tina, feigning interest in renting the property.

Cheekily she gets her to make her a brew until her bus comes.

She eventually presses Tina, after some endless babbling about them being sisters.

Quite a bleak, emotional little play with some humor from Anne (Including her mooning Tina to cheer her up.)

I really just wanted to illustrate the final awkward little hug between them at the end.

All's well that end's well.

Some more sketchbook ramblings..

For the past few days, I've volunteered to be an invigilator for an exhibition entitled 'ExtInked' hosted by the Ultimate Holding CompanyIt took place in a refurbished railway alley that had been converted into a warehouse space in Salford.

As you walked in, a black table displayed 100 original pen and ink drawings of species that were about to become extinct, ranging from birds, insects, fungi and flowers. These were going to be tattoos, and to apply for one you had to fill out a form with a personal statement on why you wanted this specific species, and then the best reason was then chosen.

A video set up at the back of the room filmed the people getting tattooed live upstairs.

Upstairs was where 4 people were being tattooed by 4 different artists, from Ink Vs. Steel who were based in Leeds. After being tattooed, portraits were taken by professional photographer David Penny (http://www.anatomyprojects.co.uk) and his assistants from the MMU photography course. They helped out with this massive old camera (can't remember the name of it, but it was ancient- the ones where you have to throw a cape over yourself to use it)

I just sat at the back and drew what I saw. I also got a few sketches of people getting inked.

Rough design submission for a play currently going into production for February.

It's about a woman in a mid-life crisis who eventually discovers she is the spirit of Anne Boleyn. I wanted to hint at stiff Tudor portraits (Hence the loose rose floral pattern) Nothing to blatant to give away the plot.

This is the first time I've ever designed a bit of a proper poster.

Lissadell House is this old estate house near the homestead in Sligo where Yeats used to hang out. Pretty decent, if slightly bleak-looking.

Bernarda Alba illustrations

A long-suffering servant, Poncia bitches about she wishes she could "..lock Bernarda up in a room and spit on her face for a whole year. Till I leave her- just like a lizard the boys have squashed!"

A weeping servant recalls a different memory from Bernarda's husband (Inside the white and blue sections) Just then Bernarda scolds her and tells her to leave. "The poor are like animals" she caws "They seem to be made of different stuff!"

Bernarda Alba and the rest of the women walk in from her husband's funeral, complaining of the heat. The women make snide comments aside.

I'm illustrating the play 'The House of Bernarda Alba" by Lorca, about a family of sisters and their mother in 1930s Spain. This is a very loose character design for the eldest sister, Angustias as she listens at the door to the men talking, after her step-fathers funeral.

She is forbidden to leave the house as her family are in mourning, nor can she speak to any unrelated man. She's fustrated, she fancies one of the men outside the door and she hates that she's still single at 39. According to the other sisters, is also a bit on the unattractive side.

(Based her face on Lorraine Tighe from the Apprentice.)

Based on a story from tacky low-shelf mag 'Take a Break"

An Israeli couple living in North London come to hostile disagreement as the wife falls pregnant, much to the husband's annoyance. The husband (Who suffers from an OCD where he can't say the word 'mathematics' and has to tie his shoes and walk a certain way) claims he had semen taken from him after a minor operation back in Israel and is convinced many women are pregnant with his sperm. Despite the fact that he is utterly obsessed with the idea that he can't cope with fatherhood, his wife adamantly stands by her choice- she chooses to keep the baby.

Attending the ultrasound scan, he sneers that is doesn't even look like a baby. Days later she collapses with severe bleeding and is rushed to hospital. Doctors insist she and the baby are fine, but she still worries.

Her husband grows more distant with each passing day, spending much time with his psychiatrist- who later urgently rings his wife to inform her that her husband has been crushing abortion pills into her food all along. He flees back to Israel, but leaves threatening calls, threatening to kill the baby. After returning to England, Police raid a flat in London where he has been in hiding, where they catch him trying to hang himself.
